R4 DSDue to the great sucess of the original R4 DS, there are currently many variant of the R4 cards on the market all trying to emulate the sucess of the R4 DS. Many of these clone R4 DS are completely rubbish which tarnished and perversed the name of the original R4 DS. Fortunately, there are a few variants of the R4 card that came out good and have over the years proven to be a worthy sucessor of the R4 DS. One of this card is the R4 SDHC. In many ways, the R4 SDHC is similar to the R4 DS. The R4 SDHC software is a derivative of the original R4 DS software as part of the original R4 DS team is now on the R4 SDHC team. As the R4 SDHC and the R4 DS software are pretty similar, the R4 SDHC maintains the high performance set by the R4 DS while continously being updated to include many new features and fixes. Like the R4 DS, the R4 SDHC can do much more than playing homebrew games. Similar to the R4 DS, the R4 SDHC is able to be used as a music player, video player and other cool functions.
Using R4 DSHowever, the R4 SDHC is a great improvement over the R4 DS in many ways. Firstly, the R4 SDHC was the first R4 variant to be able to take micro SDHC format which means that it is able to take up to 32GB micro SD while the R4 DS is only able to take up to 2GB micro SD. The R4 DS team was never able to get the R4 DS to support the micro SDHC format due to limitation in the design of the R4 DS. As file size is continously getting bigger, there will come a time when the 2GB limitation of the R4 DS will be not enough and more memory is needed. The R4 SDHC which is able to support up to 32GB micro SDHC is definitely better in this respect compare to the R4 DS. This allows the R4 SDHC to take in more homebrew games, videos, music and other media file than the R4 DS and having more memory space for the R4 firmware to run properly. Even after many years, the R4 DS is still the fastest loading DS Card. As the R4 SDHC is based on the R4 DS, its performance is also pretty good and is only a fraction slower than the R4 DS, easily outperforming many other DS Cards on the market. Both the R4 DS and the R4 SDHC are compatible with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. R4 DS and R4 SDHC are however, not compatible with the Nintendo DSi. If you are looking for a Nintendo DSi, please look at our DSi card pages. With the released of the new Nintendo DSi, prices of the DS card such as the R4 DS and the R4 SDHC are now at an all time low, making it perfect to pick up a R4 SDHC or a R4 DS today. |
